Irina Pavlova

Try to find a picture of Irina Pavlova, I dare you. If my mad Google skills couldn’t suss it out, it doesn’t exist. The new owner of the New Jersey Nets, Russian Mikhail Prokhorov, has appointed Irina Pavlova as president of the company that will oversee his ownership of the Nets and their new stadium he’s building.
“She will work closely with the management structure of the Nets to create all conditions necessary for successful development of the team,” he said.
But who is she? Well, she has an MBA from Stanford. She worked for Google, and before that for Prudential. She’s fluent in Russian, English and Spanish. She has lived in the U.S. for over 10 years, and is the daughter of a Soviet diplomat who grew up in Moscow and Washington. She also has apparently never been photographed!
I want to know what she looks like! Especially what she looks like in a New Jersey Nets shirt, because according to her boss, going to games will be part of her job.

Bp Oil Spill Video

According to the LA Times, actor Kevin Costner may have an oil spill solution.  If it works, it could save BP a lot of time, effort and embarassment from trying to clean up their mess in the Gulf of Mexico.  Oil has continued to spew daily into the surrounding waters in the aftermath of a Transocean oil rig explosion weeks ago.

Costner’s proposed solution may include the use of special oil separation machines.  The star of “Waterworld” and “Field of Dreams” has been part of a project to oversee such machinery, just in case something like the Exxon Valdez oil incident occurred.  The latest oil spill is definitely close to that same level, and could grow worse if something isn’t done quickly.  According to The Associated Press, there’s been 6 million gallons of oil spilled so far from this latest disaster, while Valdez was responsible for 11 million gallons back in Alaska in 1989.

Costner says of the oil separation machine:

“It’s prepared to go out and solve problems, not talk about them.”

On Thursday, BP announced that more oil than originally estimated has been spewing into the Gulf of Mexico.  BLP PLC spokesman Mark Proegler reported that the mile-long tube being used to capture oil has been getting as much as 210,000 gallons a day, but there is still an amount of oil escaping, which Proegler didn’t disclose.

A video of the BP oil spill was put live online in streaming format to show just how things look in the Gulf.  Reportedly, that video stream drew such interest from curious web surfers that the website crashed.  BP has also come under intense scrutiny for the magnitude of this environmental disaster.  See footage of the video here.

Should actor Kevin Costner be given the time and resources to try to solve this problem, or is it the responsibility of BP?  Maybe a consulting session is in order between the Hollywood star and the oil company?

Massey Energy

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — Shares of Massey Energy plunged more than 8% Tuesday, one day after an explosion at one of the company’s coal mines in West Virginia killed at least 25 workers and left 4 missing.

The blast took place at the Upper Big Branch Mine, about 30 miles south of Charleston, during a shift change Monday afternoon.
Massey (MEE) stock was down 10% at 12:25 p.m. ET Tuesday. Still, the company’s shares are up almost 20% year-to-date. Massey’s headquarters are in Richmond.

The cause of the explosion, the deadliest U.S. mining disaster in 25 years, was unknown Tuesday.

Massey was previously fined for violations at the Upper Big Branch and other mines, said David Lipschitz, a senior analyst at Credit Agricole Securities.

“Massey has probably had more fines and other issues than its competitors,” Lipschitz said. “Of course, violations can be something like trash on the floor. I’m not excusing them, but coal is a tough industry.”

The Grocery Czar, owned by Marietta’s David McKeone, does the comparison shopping many don’t care to do themselves. The subscriber service compares prices on as many as 80 items, twice a week. The majority of the products are not the circular sale items. Four shoppers armed with the same grocery list head into Publix, Kroger, Walmart and Aldi twice a week. Then, McKeone does a side-by-side comparison on everything from laundry detergent and trash bags to skinless chicken breast and tomatoes.

The findings might look like this: The same brand of a 5-pound bag of red potatoes one week this month was $3.99 at Publix, $2.47 at Kroger, $3.77 at Walmart and $1.19 at Aldi. Sure, no one is going to run from store to store to save a few dollars, but you might choose the store you’ll do your shopping at that week based on which has the lowest prices on most of the items you need. And that store changes from week to week. With or without coupons, shoppers are saving.

“I was thinking that I was shopping at Walmart and getting the best deals,” said Remboldt of Roswell. “It was fascinating to me to see that that was not necessarily the case. The prices within grocery stores fluctuate so much that you can’t say one over the other is a better deal regularly.”

McKeone won’t declare the least expensive store, either. Retired from a career in the automotive industry, McKeone, 62, said he was driven to create this business by his passion for food.

“I’m trying to help some people who right now need some help,” he said.

It appears to be working, with nearly 1,000 paying at least the $8.47 monthly fee since The Grocery Czar launched in November.

“We don’t impulse shop anymore,” said Edward Phillips of Woodstock. “We used to go to just one grocery store and buy everything we wanted. Now, we’re a little more selective.”

Holly Lundberg logs onto the site on Thursdays and Sundays and sees that an item that was cheapest at one store one week might be a lot more at the same store two weeks later. She and her husband are saving $100 a month, she said.

“The biggest thing for me is to learn that I can’t just be a store shopper, but I have to be a price shopper,” she said.

Oil hovers above $74 in Asia

080516_oil_drilling_genericSINGAPORE: Oil prices hovered above $74 a barrel Monday inAsia amid light trading volume for the Lunar New Year holiday.

Benchmark crude for March delivery was up 6 cents at $74.19 a barrel at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.15 to settle at$74.13 on Friday.

Oil has crisscrossed the $75 a barrel level in recent months jumping to $84 last month before dropping to $69.59 earlier this month _ as investors’ eye weak crude demand from the U.S. and Europe offset by growing consumption in developing countries such as China.

In other Nymex trading in March contracts, heating oil rose 0.78cent to $1.9267 a gallon, and gasoline gained 0.33 cent to $1.9328 a gallon. Natural gas was steady at $5.47 per 1,000 cubic feet. In London, Brent crude was up 15 cents at $73.05 on the ICE futures exchange.
